Body For Life: For Women
Body For Life: For Women

The book is a 12 week program addressing emotional health, nutrition, and strength. It has a refreshing angle on our obsession with losing weight - the author, and contributing author: Artemis Limpert "focuses on minimizing fat and maximizing tone, being a smaller size at a higher weight".

* Be conscious of how you exercise. "Work on progress, not perfection," Peeke said. Don't just do the StairMaster; embrace diversity.

* Eat every three to four hours, and watch those portions. "We've bashed carbs and we under-eat proteins ... make combinations in a balanced way. When we eat this way, we eat more protein, "Peeke said. Some women eat huge amounts of healthy foods then wonder why their bodies are out of proportion. Eating too much brown rice or drinking too many smoothies is not good, Peeke said.

* Get a dose of vitamin I. That is "I" as in intensity. "Women have to learn to become more intense," Peeke said. "Start with a creative combo of strength training and cardio. As you age, you should increase the time you strength train. After 40, muscle mass melts at two to three times the rate of muscle in men," Peeke said. Pilates, yoga and resistance tubing are a few strength exercises you can do.

Why a different book for women? Here is a another quote from Dr Peeke (one that you may not agree with!):
"Men embrace intensity. They go into a gym and go, "Go hard or go home.' A woman goes in and says, "Oh my God, do I have to sweat? What about my hair?'" Peeke says, with animation.

It works, August 14, 2007
By  Linda J. Hixon (Belen, NM)

Diets are boring; working out is worse. Then you find you have to do something because your doctor is on your case. This plan actually works. I was introduced to it by a trainer at a gym and I have not just my own progress to monitor but also a bunch of other over-the-hill types in the same boat as me. We're stronger, slimmer, and walk proud. It gives step by step instructions on weight lifting how-tos, power bars, the usual what-to-eat/what-not-to-eat, multi-vitamins - absolutely everything. Besides being a good read, it motivates the reader into action.

Almost as good as the real thing, June 1, 2007

Pam Peeke expanded Bill Philips BODY FOR LIFE into a plan just for women. The book offers special features like focusing on weight loss/work out programs for women at various stages of life. That's good. There's even special diet recommendations for women depending on their age. I liked all that. There is also great motivation tools in here with plenty of goal setting for you to work through. And if you don't have Bill Philips BODY FOR LIFE, you'll love this book by itself. I just couldn't give it 5 stars merely because it just doesn't QUITE match up to the best of the best--the original BODY FOR LIFE by Philips. The bottom line, this book is for women with little to no knowlege or interest in weight training but willing to give it a try to obtain the body they always dreamed of. If you're intimidated by a program written for both men and women, get this book instead of Philips (but you can't go wrong getting both--I did and was glad I did).

I'M RECOMMENDING IT TO MY CLIENTS, April 30, 2007
By  Pamela D. Blair "Author(Hawthorne, NY)

I have a lending library of books that I recommend to my clients and Body for Life for Women is among them. It may have some of the flaws that other reviewers have noted, but this book still has a lot of strong, useful advice to offer. Pamela D. Blair, Author.

The Bottom Line

Overall, this is an excellent book for all women, focusing not just on losing fat, but creating a healthy, balanced life based on realistic fitness goals and expectations. Dr. Peeke provides great information about the different stages women experience, how we change over time and how to change our eating and exercise programs to fit where we are in life.
